Anti-Quilt Quilt
Repurposed fabrics, LED lights, Servo Motors, Arduino UNO
2022
When quilts were first displayed as fine art in a museum, everything that traditional quiltmakers valued about their handiwork went ignored. The curators were not looking for quality handwork or preservation, rather looking for visual qualities in the quilts that resembled abstract expressionist paintings of the time. This led me to ask, how many traditional rules and values of the craft can be ignored and the work still be defined as a quilt? The Anti-Quilt Quilt incorporates modern technology (such as LED lights and motors), beadwork, and odd shaped borders to push these traditional boundaries while questioning the static object. By combining the old with the new, The Anti-Quilt Quilt acts as a bridge between the quilting community and the coding community through a combination of modern and traditional practices.
