Ceramic glazes are traditionally understood as surfaces, materials that depend on a clay body beneath them for structure, expanding, melting, and solidifying onto an already existing form. In Foamarella, I invert this fundamental relationship by asking what happens when the glaze becomes the vessel itself. This vessel emerges from a material contradiction. While its patterned surface draws from the historical practice of nerikomi, the work is constructed entirely from foaming glaze. No clay body supports the form. The material traditionally understood as surface becomes structure. The resulting form retains the visual language of a ceramic container while existing through a process that challenges conventional distinctions between body and surface, decoration and structure.

​The work occupies a space between preservation and invention, carrying forward inherited knowledge while testing the limits of ceramic materiality. By combining nerikomi inspired patterning with a form generated entirely through glaze, I explore how ceramics can honour its history while radically reimagining its foundations.
