Radiant Clay
Glazed Earthenware
2024

Radiant Clay is an ongoing body of work exploring glow-in-the-dark ceramic glazes and the role of participation in activating them. Centered on experimentation with rare earth oxides and varied firing temperatures, the project embraces failure as an essential part of the creative process. Through repeated testing and refinement, a custom glaze was developed that produces vivid fluorescence under ultraviolet light—each misstep contributing to a deeper understanding of material behavior and ceramic technique.

Extending beyond material research, Radiant Clay takes form as an interactive installation in which ceramic vessels remain visually dormant until illuminated by ultraviolet light. Activated by the audience, the work highlights the transformative power of collective participation: individual actions bring the pieces, and the space as a whole, to life. Presented at the Night Light Festival, the installation reflects the festival’s spirit of unity, emphasizing how shared engagement creates vibrancy, connection, and meaning.

Together, the project bridges technical innovation and communal experience, demonstrating that both artistic breakthroughs and thriving communities are built through experimentation, contribution, and connection.
