What happens when you encounter something strange in your everyday life? Do you stop to take a photograph? Do you whisper questions to your friends about the unexpected sight in front of you? Do you laugh, stare, or dismiss it as another example of the city’s “weirdos per capita”? How we respond to moments of absurdity reveals something about how we move through shared spaces.
This Dude is Everywhere is an interactive textile performance and participatory installation that explores public curiosity, play, and collective experience through a series of colourful, wearable fabric sculptures. These exaggerated tissue textile forms are designed to interrupt the everyday and create moments of connection between strangers. Rather than existing as static objects, the work relies on participation; the viewer’s reaction, interaction, and interpretation become essential components of the piece. The work began as an experiment in public space, where I wandered through the streets of Montréal wearing these unusual textile suits and observed how people responded. The unexpected encounters, photographs, conversations, and online reactions became part of the artwork itself. After a video of one of these performances was shared by Montréal-based Instagram page @f*cknomtl, a commenter wrote, “this dude is everywhere,” a phrase that captured the playful persistence of the project and became the title of the work. The piece has continued to evolve through different iterations and contexts. In one iteration, I invited fellow artists to participate in a spontaneous textile parade. With no prior instructions beyond choosing a piece, putting it on, and following me, we moved through the Montréal metro system and the Concordia University Library during exam season, transforming familiar spaces of stress and routine into unexpected moments of collective joy and interruption. In gallery settings, the textiles are removed from their original context and offered without instruction, allowing participants to determine how they might be worn, moved through, or experienced. People have rolled in them, performed with them, transformed them into costumes, and created new relationships with the materials. Each interaction becomes another iteration of the work. Through collaborations with performers, musicians, and artists—including Montréal-based Colombian circus collective Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra—the textiles have entered new environments where movement, sound, and performance further expand their possibilities. This Dude is Everywhere asks what happens when we allow ourselves to be interrupted by joy, curiosity, and play. The work exists somewhere between sculpture, performance, and social experiment, creating temporary communities through shared moments of wonder, confusion, and delight. |
