REPURPOSED CLOTHES OF MY LATE FATHER, UHAUL BOX THAT HELD THE CLOTHING

In an era of excess and disposability, this work speaks to the value of reuse, the emotional weight of material, and the radical potential of craft. Constructed from my late father’s clothing, it honors both personal memory and collective histories of making do, mending, and reimagining. Inspired by the improvisational compositions of the Gee’s Bend quilters and Sherri Lynn Wood, I embraced an intuitive, responsive process—cutting, piecing, and stitching together fragments aiming to process grief and emphasize the energy held in our clothing even after we pass, transforming personal textiles into deeply emotional and communal objects.

This piece sits at the intersection of fashion, art, and memory. While it takes the form of a jacket, a functional, wearable garment, it resists the fast-paced cycles of fashion by embracing slowness, sustainability, and emotional depth. By repurposing personal textiles, it challenges conventional fashion production, which often prioritizes newness and disposability, instead emphasizing longevity, care, and the embedded histories within clothing.
